About Hing ( Asafoetida )
Hing, also known as asafoetida, is a pungent-smelling spice commonly used in Indian
cuisine and Ayurvedic medicine. Derived from the resin of the Ferula plant, it has a wide
range of health benefits, particularly related to digestion, respiratory health, and anti-
inflammatory effects.
- Asafoetida, a gum-resin, contains resin (40–64%), gum (25%), and volatile oil (10–17%) with sulfur-containing compounds, terpenoids, and ferulic acid being key components.
- Asafoetida is rich in phenolic compounds like tannins and flavonoids, and also contains Eremophila and δ-cadinene which have antioxidant properties.
